This article shows you how to use Google Trends – a free online tool – to better understand prospects search for home improvement topics online.

What is Google Trends?

It’s a free online tool, created and maintained by Google.  It allows you to see how often specific keywords, phrases and subjects have been searched on over a specific period of time.

Why should Remodeling Contractors care?

Because your prospects and customers may not use the same language you do to search for things online.  That means if you want to attract potential customers to your website, you need to know what words they use to find the products and services you sell.

How does it work?

Let’s look at a specific example for a cabinet refacing company.  I entered four search terms into Google Trends:

  • Cabinet replacements
  • Cabinet refacing
  • Cabinet door replacement
  • Cabinet resurfacing

Then I adjusted the filters to show search trends for:

  • United States
  • Past 12 months
  • Home & Garden searches
  • Web searches (verses News, Image, Shopping or YouTube searches

Here’s what I got back:

google-trends-1

The red line is “cabinet refacing”.   At a quick glance, you can see that significantly more people use this term when searching Google than “cabinet resurfacing” or “cabinet door replacements.”

So, if your company does “replace”, “reface” or resurface kitchen cabinet doors, it helps to know what words your prospective customers search on to find your services.

This is a pretty simplistic example that shows “refacing” is a more popular search term than “resurfacing.”

Think like a homeowner

The whole point of this post is to question the language you use online.  If you’re using industry terms or manufacturer’s product names, those might not be the same words that a homeowner with a remodeling budget would use.

Google Trends is just one of many tools you can use to make sure the information on your website is helping to attract the prospects you need to help your business grow.
